Operation Roman
For over 8 months, The Guild Foundation has been supporting humanitarian efforts in Ukraine. We proudly announce that those efforts are now coming home as we bring relief for one young Ukrainian soldier to American shores. Through our donors’ and partners’ generosity, the Guild Foundation is sponsoring Roman, a 23-year-old Ukrainian Explosive Engineer, to the United States for rehabilitation inpatient care, outpatient care, and lower extremity prostheses.
Roman suffered a tragic injury at the end of April this year when, in the line of duty, a Russian cluster munition detonated in his vicinity. The result was a double-leg battle-field amputation. The Guild Foundation and its partners are committed to getting the best care and rehabilitation possible for this young soldier who volunteered for the Army in order to defend his home and family.
On November 15th Roman arrived to the United States! He was accompanied by his godfather, Yuri Rotyslav, a Colonel in the Ukranian Territorial Defense Forces. Guild Foundation co-founder Sean Bonner and members of the local Philadelphia Ukranian community were on hand to receive this brave young man. He arrived excited to began treatment at one of the best rehabilitation hospitals in the world.
On Nov 16th, the day after his arrival, Roman began fitting for his new prosthetics and the start of his new life. The doctors and rehabilitation specialists are extremely optimistic about Roman’s recovery. Even with the best help in the world though, Roman still has a long road ahead of him. He has months and months of physical rehabilitation and then ultimately will return to his home in Ukraine. For now, Roman is focused on his recovery, one step at a time. He is facing this task as he faced danger on the battlefield; with undaunted courage and spirit.
Roman spent over 3 months in rehabilitation in the Philadelphia area. The therapy was daily and intense. Learning to walk again, adjusting to his new artificial limbs, was far from easy. He took on each task like a military mission. Slowly, step by step Roman learned to walk again.
At the end of his rehabilitation Roman was able to fulfill a dream. He headed to Washington D.C. and was able to be recognized by a fellow warrior and member of congress, Rep. Dan Crenshaw. Congressman Crenshaw knows a little something about returning from war and finding a new mission in public service. These two men, bonded by the visible and invisible wounds of war are a reminder that our uncommon bond is not determined by nationality, or language, or color of skin. Our common cloth is a shared sacrifice for country. The relationship between US and Ukraine was on full display in our nations capitol.
The Guild Foundation has received generous contributions from private and corporate donors, including Lawall Prosthetics, Crozer Health’s Taylor Hospital, Mareth Family, NewSpring, and U.S. Pack covering a portion of the cost of Roman's new artificial limbs and rehabilitation at one of the leading facilities in the US.
The Guild Foundation continues to support Roman's recovery efforts and continues to support Humanitarian operations in Ukraine.
